Advice Tennis strings

Different types of tennis strings

When choosing the right tennis strings for your racket, it is important to consider several factors. One of the most important aspects is the material the strings are made of. There are different types of tennis strings available, each with their own unique properties and benefits.
A popular choice among professional players are the natural gut strings. These strings are made from animal intestines. Fun fact, 2 cows are needed for each set of gut of 12 meters. That is also the reason that gut strings are generally quite expensive. By the way, a small side note, professional players who use gut strings all use this in the form of a hybrid stringing. This means half a set of gut for the length string and half a set of polyester string for the width (or the other way around of course). Gut strings are known for their comfort and playability. They offer excellent ball control and give good feedback when hitting the ball. Gut holds its tension for a very long time and that is one of the reasons why professional players are increasingly choosing gut stringing. Gut strings are also highly recommended for players who suffer from tennis elbow. Due to the elasticity of the string, gut stringing is very arm-friendly! For players who are looking for durability and control, polyester strings are a good option. These strings are made of synthetic materials and offer a good mix of power and control. They are also less prone to slipping and in general, polyester gives a higher spin potential than gut strings or multifilaments. Polyester strings are ideal for players who are looking for extra spin and control. They have a coating that gives the strings more freedom of movement and therefore makes it easier to play with topspin. However, these strings are less comfortable than other types of strings and can put more strain on the arm. For this reason, we do not recommend polyester strings for recreational players who play quite flat and for people with a tennis elbow. For players who are looking for a combination of comfort and durability, multifilament strings are a good choice. These strings consist of multiple layers and offer good vibration damping, which results in more comfort during play. Finally, hybrid strings are an interesting option for players who want to combine specific properties. Hybrid strings use different types of strings in the length and width direction of the racket. For example, you can combine the durability of polyester strings with the comfort of multifilament strings. Choosing the right tennis strings therefore depends on your playing style and personal preferences. Do not just combine strings with each other. For example, do you choose a polyester string with a sharp angle in the length and a very soft multi in the width? There is a good chance that the sharp poly will quickly cut through the soft multi and you will therefore not be able to use this combination for long. Contact us to discuss which hybrid stringing you should try.

The lifespan of a tennis string

The lifespan of a tennis string can be strongly influenced by various factors. The most important factors are listed below:

  • String tension: The tension of the string is of great importance. Too high a tension can lead to rapid breakage, while too low a tension can cause reduced control.
  • Frequency of play: The more often you play, the faster the string will wear out. A string does not have an unlimited lifespan and unfortunately we still see far too often that tennis players continue to play for too long with a worn-out stringing. A frequently used (global) rule for stringing your racket: The number of times you play tennis per week is the number of times you should replace your stringing per year. This may sound like a lot. But even though your stringing may still be intact, it has probably already lost a lot of its stretch and tension. The stringing still works, but it does not play optimally and does not help you get the most out of your tennis.
    • Maintenance: A string cannot really be maintained. However, there are small things you can do to prevent accelerated wear. Such as:
      1. Do not leave your racket in the car. Due to the high temperatures in the summer, your stringing will lose its tension more quickly in the car. Heat is disastrous for your stringing.
      2. Do not tap your shoe sole with your racket. All those grains of gravel, smash court or sand can get between your strings. This can cause friction and cause your stringing to break more quickly.
      3. And this one speaks for itself, but do not tap your stringing on benches, chairs or net posts. Hit a small sharp edge and bam, there goes the stringing.
    • Playing style: The playing style of the player also has an influence. An aggressive player will cause wear more quickly than a more defensive player. Here, for example, the amount of topspin has a major effect on string wear.
    • String thickness and material: The string thickness and material of the tennis string are important. A thinner tennis string will wear out faster than a thicker string. It should be noted that the feel of a thinner string is better than that of a thicker string.

What are tennis racket strings made of?

When choosing new strings for your tennis racket, it is important to know what the strings are made of. There are different materials that tennis racket strings can be made of, including polyester (monofilament), multifilament, nylon/synthetic gut and cow gut. Polyester strings, also called monofilament, are known for their durability and control. We are talking about durability in the sense that this string does not break easily. The disadvantage of polyester tennis strings is that they lose their tension faster than multiflament strings. They offer players the opportunity to make powerful shots with a lot of spin. Multifilament strings, on the other hand, are made of multiple fibers and are known for their comfort and feel. These strings absorb vibrations and reduce the impact on the player’s arm. The ideal strings for players with arm injuries such as tennis elbow. Nylon or synthetic gut strings are popular choices because of their affordability and all-round performance. They offer a good mix of durability, strength and comfort. Finally, cow gut strings are considered the crème de la crème of tennis strings because of their unparalleled feel and control. Very arm-friendly and a super good tension retention. With gut, please note that despite the fact that gut strings are coated nowadays and weather conditions are less important than before, gut strings still cannot withstand moisture. Playing with gut strings in a downpour? Not a good idea. When choosing the right tennis strings, it is important to take into account your playing style, level and personal preferences. By comparing and experimenting with the different materials, you can ultimately find the strings that suit you best and take your tennis experience to the next level.

How do you know if your tennis stringing is still good?

There are several ways to check if your tennis stringing is still good. Firstly, it is important to pay attention to loss of tension in the strings. If the strings start to shift or if you notice that you have less control over the ball, this can be a sign that your stringing needs to be replaced. The sliding of the string can also mean that you have started playing with more topspin and therefore it does not necessarily have to be a bad sign. The above is only an indication. Another way to check the condition of your stringing is to feel the tension of the strings. If the strings feel slack, it is probably time to have your racket restrung. You will often hear that the string vibrates for a long time and makes a somewhat lower sound than with a freshly strung racket or a racket with a higher number of kilos. It is recommended to have your racket restrung regularly in order to continue to perform optimally on the tennis court. With us you can have your stringing checked for free using professional equipment, so that you can always be sure that your racket is in top condition.

Durability of tennis strings

Tennis strings are less durable than many people think. Even if a stringing still looks intact, it may already need replacing. Durability not only has to do with wear, but also with the loss of tension and stretch in the tennis string. This is not visible at first glance and it is therefore very important that you have this checked regularly. We have a specific tension meter for this called ERT300. This device measures what we cannot see with the naked eye. This allows us to give you a better insight into whether your stringing needs replacing or not.

The importance of the right tension

  1. The right tension of the tennis strings is essential for good performance on the court. Too high a tension can lead to more vibrations and therefore a greater chance of injuries.
  2. Experiment with different tensions to discover what works best for your game. Maintaining control and power are crucial when choosing the right tension for your tennis strings. This is different for everyone and as a frequent player it is therefore important to test it thoroughly. That way you know what is ideal for you.
  3. Having your racket checked and restrung regularly can help to maintain the right tension. This ensures that you can always perform optimally on the tennis court.
